Recent Projects

Water Quality Testing Initiative
Funds were raised through a grant from the Norcross Wildlife Foundation and raffles to perform a water testing program in the ice-free, off-season months of Sept. - Dec. and March - May in partnership with the GVSU’s Anis Water Resource Institute (AWRI). The Chapter will have qualified individuals working on this project to ensure the accuracy of any and all testing. AWRI Biologist and SFLMC member Matt Cooper is leading this ‘first of its kind’ study.

Opened Chicago Beaches to Surfing
After over 30 years of being officially banned, the Surfrider Foundation Lake Michigan Chapter used it’s strength in numbers and diversity in skills to overturn the ban for good. Read more here.

Regional Surf Access Protection
in 2008 & again in 2009 the rights of surfer to enjoy the waves near piers and along certain stretches of beaches have been threatened. Since SFLMC’s membership consists of people from many different careers and backgrounds, we were able to send a lawyer/member and a scientist/member to the State House of Representative in Michigan to speak on behalf of surfers and to ensure we would not be banned access to the pier by a pier jumping ban designed to reduce accidents by swimmers. This issue will continue to come up in several municipalities throughout the region, but SFLMC will continue to fight for the rights of surfers to pursue their sport and make the case how the waters of the Great Lakes are much safer with surfers in the water.
